Renault Clio Renaultsport (01-05) - Review Review by Parkers on 21 September 2005 Hot hatch buyers haven't had it so good since the 1980s. Every manufacturer worth their salt has a performance version of their supermini or small hatch. This is Renault's and it's one of the best in the business. The 172 was the original car - launched in 2001 - and was a very accomplished hot-hatch offering focused performance at a reasonable price. A Cup version was launched in 2002 aimed at serious driving enthusiasts who wanted a car, without frills or luxuries, that they could throw around a race track. 2003 saw the model receive 10 bhp extra and a name change to 182. And as a final flourish, Renault launched a 'Trophy' model in mid 2005. Just 500 of these cars were available with sports suspension and Recaro bucket seats. 3.5 out of 5 Other Renault reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 2.5 out of 5 Comfort In theory, three can fit in the back, but in reality it only seats two adults - and they'll be short on legroom, too. Aside from the occasional RenaultSport logo, the interior is similar to the standard Clio, so there's lots of black plastic and it can look a bit drab. However, the front seats give excellent support and are adjustable in many ways. Buyers should think of it as more of a 2+2. If you want the maximum practicality then you’d be better looking at something else as the Clio isn’t biggest in its class but the boot will do for most needs and the seat backs do split fold. Doorbins, a decent-sized glovebox and a small cubby/cupholder in the centre console for storage. Get a Renault Clio Renaultsport valuation How does the boot space compare? View of the optional sat-nav (where fitted) is slightly obscured from the driver's seat. Generally comfortable, but some interior trim does not have the quality feel of some of its rivals. Seats are good in all models, but those in the Trophy are the best (especially for the keener driver), as they're Recaro bucket seats.
