Renault Clio Renaultsport (06 on) - Review

This is the hot version of the Clio, tuned by the masters at Renaultsport - the side of the firm that's responsible for motor racing. It follows a simple recipe – it's a three-door Clio with a 2.0-litre engine and tuned chassis to make it an involving drive with some added-on sports styling to hammer the point home. The original model has 197bhp, while the revised version - introduced in May 2009 - offers 200bhp along with a sharper looking front end. As before, 0-62mph takes less than seven seconds and it handles superbly with masses of grip. However, while it's great on twisting roads, the hot Clio can be tiring to drive in town while a stiff ride means it is rarely comfortable.

Buying new

The Renaultsport Clio is good value given the performance it offers but be aware that although the Cup model is cheap, it's also very sparsely equipped and doesn't even have air conditioning. It's worth asking for a discount but don't expect too much off. The standard model is very closely priced to the Vauxhall Corsa VXR.

Buying used

The hot Clio has quite a following so you should be able to find a good choice of well looked after examples with reasonable mileages. Renault dealers are a good place to look, but you'll pay extra for the privilege of buying via the approved used scheme. Avoid any cars that have been modified. The latest facelifted model was introduced in May 2009 so will be on an 09-plate and should be recognisable by the much larger air intake on the front grill compared to the previous version.

Selling

There will always be a market for the Renaultsport Clio, but look after the car to ensure it achieves the best price. Cup models don't have much kit, but are designed to be more driver orientated and so will appeal to enthusiasts.
