Renault Megane Hatchback (02-06) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Megane looked pretty radical when it was first launched in 2002 and split opinion as to whether that was a good thing or a bad thing. It's available in a number of different bodystyles, and in an attempt to be all things to all men can be specified with a wide variety of engines and equipment levels. It excels in many areas, including safety and value, but a series of mechanical and electrical gremlins may make buyers think about another model.

Safety

Like many Renaults, Megane is the safest in its class, with a five-star Euro NCAP rating. Plenty of airbags (three-door gets eight, ten on the five-door). Outstanding security with keyless entry, deadlocks, a Thatcham-approved immobiliser and RAID (Renault Anti-Intruder Device). Privilege also benefits from an alarm.

Reliability

A torrent of problems from owners of early cars - no new car should have so many problems. Squealing brakes, water leaks, loose trim, loss of power and gear selection problems are just a few. More recent cars seem to be better built and complaints are decreasing.
