Renault Scenic (03-09) - Review

The Renault Scenic is a people carrier that manages to blend style and practicality together in one neat package. It's clever interior is its biggest asset and makes it an ideal family choice. There's generous room for passengers in the back, plenty of useful cubbyholes dotted around and some excellent safety features like Sleep Safe headrests which support the necks of youngsters. It's a shame then that the rear seats do not fold flat like newer alternatives (such as the Citroen C4 Picasso). A Conquest version is available which boasts off road-inspired body cladding and increased ground clearance, but if you need more space then the Grand Scenic, which is larger and has seven seats, could be the answer.

Comfort

The airy cabin is helped by large glass areas while there's an optional panoramic roof that allows even more light in. Thanks to good ride quality the Scenic is comfortable and quiet - especially on the motorway, plus there's a surprising amount of room in the back with space for three passengers along with good legroom and ample shoulder space. However some of the smaller petrol engines can be a little noisy, especially when driven hard.

Practicality

The Scenic is one of the most practical people carriers around and has an abundance of stowage. The best feature is a sliding central unit - not only does it offer a deep storage box but also comes with two cupholders, a second power point and twin integrated armrests. It is a £250 option but we think it’s essential for family buyers. Elsewhere there are underfloor cubbyholes in the front and back along with concealed storage under the door armrests. All three rear seats slide individually and can be folded and tumbled forward to increase boot space, but disappointingly they do not fold completely flat like many people carrier and look ugly when flipped up. Boot space with the seats in place isn't great with just 430 litres and many people carrier of this size offer more.

Behind the wheel

It is easy to find a comfortable driving position in the Scenic and we like the high placed gear lever, dashtop digital display and electric handbrake. Overall build quality is very good and most of the materials used are soft touch, however there are a few areas where it feels a little cheap and cars with lighter trim show scuffs and marks easily. The steering wheel stalks can be a little complex too as the twist, flick and push controls can be difficult to memorise and are out of sight.
