SEAT Alhambra (00-10) - Review

Review by David Ross on
Last Updated: 12 June 2009
With a spacious cabin, seven seats and proven reliability, the SEAT Alhambra makes an ideal car for larger families. It's actually the sister car to the Volkswagen Sharan and the pre-2006 Ford Galaxy, so you can expect strong build quality and a robust interior. It may not be the newest design, but it's good to drive and comfortable, while the frugal TDI engines mean it can be a good choice if you're looking to keep running costs down. What really appeals, however, is the fact that it's such great value for money while all models come well equipped. This makes it a good buy - new or used.

Safety

The SEAT Alhambra was never crash tested by Euro NCAP and neither were its sister cars - the Volkswagen Sharan and Ford Galaxy. However, it does come with driver, passenger and side airbags on all versions along with three-point seatbelts for all seven seats. ABS is standard, but ESP stability control is only on 2.0-litre models (both petrol and diesel). The middle-row middle-seat only has a lap strap belt on models pre-2002.

Reliability

There should be few reliability issues with the Alhambra thanks to Volkswagen engineering and good build quality. However, owners of the near identical Volkswagen Sharan have reported recurring problems with electrics (in particular windows) and air conditioning units. The Alhambra seems to have fared slightly better but we've still heard from owners with similar problems.

Car check problem points

Body

A recall in 2002 where the windscreen wiper motor may fail because of a software fault.

Engine/Gearbox

A recall in 2005 for the possibility that the bolts of the fuel pump cover may break due to a bolt production fault. A diesel leak could occur as a result.

Other

Some problems with incorrectly functioning air-con systems.
