SEAT Altea Hatchback (04 on) - Review

Review by Dan Harrison on
Last Updated: 25 February 2010
The SEAT Altea was billed as the sexiest people carrier ever when it was launched - and we reckon that's spot-on. The sweeping lines and sharp styling give it a sporty look that few other family cars can match. There's more to the Altea than just a pretty face though. It has a range of modern and efficient engines, lots of equipment and although it only seats five, it makes the most of the available space. It isn't particularly versatile though and the rear seats don't do anything clever like folding flat. It is however, good value and there's even a sporty FR model available which gets improved handling and a sportier specification. In July 2009 it was revised with subtle exterior changes, engine tweaks and a much more upmarket interior. There is also a low emission Ecomotive version which is very cheap to run.

Buying new

There are usually decent deals available on the Altea such as 0% finance offers. Often these deals are on 1.6-litre petrol models, but with a bit of haggling you could still get a reasonable discount on a more powerful model. The sporty FR no longer exists - it was dropped from the line-up when the Altea was facelifted in mid 2009 and replaced by a more toned down Sport model. This is powered by the newer 2.0 TDI common rail engine which is much smoother and quieter than the previous 2.0 TDI unit - known as Pumpe Duse. If you're after something with more rear space then take a look at the Altea XL. The Ecomotive model is the one for keeping costs down. It is cheap to tax and averages 63mpg but don't confuse it with the Ecomotive Technology version which has higher emissions.

Buying used

Compared to the likes of the Volkswagen Golf Plus, the Altea is a better value choice and you'll get a better equipped and lower mileage car for your money. There are plenty around to choose from but if you're after economy go for a 1.9 TDI model - it's also the most popular. In 2010 this was replaced by the much better 1.6 TDI available as the Ecomotive. The FR is easy to spot thanks to its sporty looks and unique alloys.

Selling

SEAT's reputation among used buyers is increasing all the time. The fact the Altea uses Volkswagen components means people recognise that it will be reliable, while its daring looks, neat handling and sporty image will appeal to younger buyers. You should have few problems selling one - especially the diesel models. The FR is sought after thanks to its extra performance.
