SEAT Altea XL (07 on) - Review

The Altea XL is a jumbo-size version of SEAT's popular and distinctive five seat people carrier. It's almost 19cm longer than the standard car and although this doesn't sound a lot, it substantially increases space in the rear, so both passenger legroom and boot space are increased. Aside from that, the Altea XL is the same in every department, so that means you get a range of powerful and efficient petrol and diesel engines, generous amounts of equipment and - for a people carrier - a good drive. It was revised in 2009 with some subtle exterior tweaks and new engines. However, the biggest changes came inside where the interior was given a more upmarket feel and look. In 2010 an Ecomotive model was introduced which has impressive fuel economy and low CO2 emissions, making it very cheap to run.

Comfort

Comfort is this car's strongest suit. All that extra room (the XL is around 20cm longer than the standard Altea) is put to good use and with loads of extra legroom three adults can sit comfortably in the back. The rear seats slide to give more legroom or increased boot space if needed. The seats are a little on the firm side and a bit narrow, but comfy enough for longer trips. The Altea XL is pretty quiet on the road with tyre and engine noise well suppressed. However, all cars come with roof bars, which can create a rustling sound on the motorway.

Practicality

With the seats folded down, there's a huge load area and more than enough space to cope with the jobs that come with family life. Despite the huge volume of 1,604 litres overall, the seats aren't as flexible as they could be. For instance they don't fold into the floor, which means the load area isn't flat - a feature that some other cars of this type offer. Inside, there's loads of storage space though, including big door bins, a large glovebox and several cupholders.

Behind the wheel

The build quality in the Altea XL is impressive so it's a shame that some of the plastics are on the hard side - there are few soft-touch areas. The driver has a good view of the road ahead, although the chunky windscreen pillars can restrict visibility when turning out of junctions or at roundabouts. But the driving position is spot-on and the main controls are sensibly placed and easy to get familiar with. When the Altea was revised in 2009 the interior was improved considerably with redesigned switches, instrument dials and a new steering wheel. The plastics were also improved which all add up to give it a far more sophisticated feel and modern look.
