SEAT Exeo ST (09 on) - Review

Review by Dan Harrison on
Last Updated: 21 February 2011
This ST estate is the load carrying version of SEAT’s upmarket and high value Exeo model. Like the saloon version, it’s heavily based on the Audi A4 that ran from 2005 to 2008. That’s good news as it looks smart, is well designed and great to drive too. But whereas Audi could be accused of being stingy when it came to standard specification, the Exeo is very well equipped – regardless of which model you choose. All cars have Bluetooth mobile phone connectivity, an iPod connection, cruise control and steering wheel-mounted stereo controls, while top models boast leather upholstery and swivelling xenon headlights. The engine range is limited, but features a great diesel engine that’s available with 120, 140 and 170bhp.

Buying new

SEAT isn’t the first manufacturer that springs to mind when you think of smart, upmarket estates. But the Exeo ST makes a convincing case for itself. If looked at against the BMW 3-Series, Mercedes-Benz and Audi A4, it comes in thousands of pounds cheaper and much better equipped. It’s also a tempting – and leftfield – choice over the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall Insignia. One major drawback for some buyers will be the lack of engine choice. Although diesel is a great option for many, it doesn’t suit everyone, while the sole 200bhp petrol engine will be too thirsty for some.

Buying used

Although the saloon went on sale in early 2009, the ST estate followed a little later. That means while you can find the saloon on a 58 plate, the earliest STs are available from September and on 59-plates. The most common model on the market is the 2.0-litre TDI Sport with 140bhp. This delivers a great mix of punchy performance and useful fuel economy, while Sport specification adds plenty of little luxuries. The best models are kept within the SEAT dealer network and are sold through the company's approved used programme.

Selling

To those in the know, the Exeo is a smart choice. The trouble may come from attracting interest from buyers who may otherwise be looking at BMW, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Ford and Vauxhall. SEAT isn’t well known for making cars like this and many people wouldn’t have heard of the Exeo name. But it is a great value-for-money proposition and – combined with SEAT’s sporty image – should win over most buyers. Most sought-after cars will be diesels that have a decent service history, preferably with a SEAT dealer.
