Skoda Fabia Estate (08 on) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Last Updated: 30 June 2009
The Fabia Estate is a great choice for young families. It’s roomy, good to drive and cheap to run. The estate model offers additional practical benefits to the hatchback - namely a bigger, versatile boot - and it meets the needs of families with smaller children with a well thought-out design. The bigger load space results in a longer body, so it isn’t as ideally suited to city life as the hatchback. But buyers in need of a roomy family car with a reasonable price tag should give this estate serious consideration. A Greenline model is available which, thanks to low emissions, is cheap to tax and returns impressive economy. There's also a Scout version which has a more rugged look along with chunky bumpers and side protection.

Buying new

The Fabia Estate is a great choice for family buyers and list prices are reasonable with the entry-level model costing less than £10,000. Equipment levels are pretty good too, making it good value for money. Skoda dealers have an excellent reputation for customer care and they have plenty of offers available on new cars too, including finance deals and free equipment upgrades. It may be possible to get a modest discount, but the Fabia Estate is competitively priced to begin with so don't expect a huge amount off.

Buying used

Thanks to its popularity, there's a good choice of used Fabia Estates on the market so you should have few problems tracking down the right car. If you're after an automatic, the only engine choice is the 1.6-litre petrol but otherwise the most popular engine is the 1.4-litre. All the engines are economical and you'll really only need a diesel if you intend to cover long distances or regularly carry heavy loads.

Selling

The estate shouldn't fetch significantly higher prices than the hatchback but it's a good all-rounder and buyers will appreciate its added practicality. Look after it, price it sensibly and a buyer should soon be interested. Highlight how practical and child friendly it is to potential family buyers.
