Skoda Fabia Hatchback (00-07) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Fabia is another VW Group success story and further strengthens Skoda's reputation as a quality manufacturer. The styling divides opinion. It's well equipped, has a smooth ride and is cheaper and roomier than Volkswagen's own Polo. Some early models have minor quality issues, but overall it's well built and good value.

Performance

Of the small petrol engines the four-valve-per-cylinder versions are significantly better to drive than the two valve units although these will suffice if you're undemanding. The 1.2 is great for around-town driving, with a great-sounding engine, and is fine for short motorway trips. Turbo-diesel units are fantastic, especially the 130bhp vRS engine. SDI very slow.

Handling

A fine combination of responsiveness and refinement, with predictable handling and good roadholding. Steering is light and easy fine around town and on the open road. Good brakes and a confident gearchange. vRS is a genuine hot-hatch alternative.
