Skoda Octavia Scout (07-12) - Review

The Octavia Scout is an ideal choice for 4x4 buyers looking for less bulk. There’s all the practicality of the Octavia estate but with the bonus of four-wheel drive when you need it, raised ride height and underbody protection. It’s ideal if you only need occasional off-road ability or regularly tow trailers or caravans. It also comes very well equipped as standard, but the engine choice is limited to a diesel and a petrol, although both deliver strong enough performance. If you want four-wheel drive but without the body cladding and extra ground clearance, Skoda also offers a 4x4 version of the standard Octavia estate. It was facelifted in early 2009. Confusingly only the interior and equipment grades were initially changed, with the exterior changes introduced in June 2009.

Buying used

This version of the Octavia is rare on the used market, though there are plenty of examples of the standard Octavia 4x4 estate, which went on sale in 2005. All Octavia Scouts are instantly recognisable by the plastic body and bumper cladding and the plastic wheel arches. The model was facelifted in early 2009 but be wary. At first only the interior was revised and it wasn't until June that models with both exterior and interior revisions were available. The later models will hold their value better.

Selling

While most people will be familiar with the Skoda Octavia, few buyers will be in the know about the Scout version, or the fact that unlike the Roomster and Fabia Scout, it is actually a 4x4. The fact it's relatively rare should mean there will always be interest, especially among more rural-based buyers. Promote it as a cheaper alternative to the Volvo XC70 and Audi A4/A6 Allroad models.
