Skoda's big car is big on space and big on value. It's an easy car to recommend as it's surprisingly cheap to buy used, has as much rear legroom as a Mercedes-Benz S-Class and is packed with equipment that would be optional on most other cars. Plus there are great engines (including punchy diesels), it's good to drive and has a thoughtfully designed interior (some models even have an umbrella concealed in the door). The only major downside is that it's a traditional saloon with fixed back seats, so it isn't especially practical, even though it has a large boot.

Performance

The range is kicked off by a 2.0-litre petrol with 115bhp. It's not really powerful enough for Superb's big body. The first petrol engine worth considering is the 150bhp 1.8T. It has a useful turn of pace and a satisfying turbo kick powering it to 60mph in a respectable 9.2 seconds. The 193bhp 2.8 V6 is the largest petrol and offers acceptable pace. Diesel is well suited to Superb and there are three engines to choose from. The most popular is the 1.9-litre TDI with 100, 105 and 130bhp. It’s economical, fairly swift and although there's some clatter on start-up, it's pretty refined too. There’s also a more modern 2.0-litre TDI with 140bhp and a range-topping and 2.5 V6 with 160bhp - the perfect engine for long distance motorway cruising.

Handling

Superb is most at home on the motorway where it cruises competently, plus it’s also pretty good when it comes to backroads, too. Although low-speed manoeuvres can be a little awkward at times and a little bodyroll is noticeable, Superb corners well at speed and it’s possible to make quick progress. The ride is as smooth as you’d expect, comfortably cushioning all but the biggest lumps and bumps in the road.
