Smart City Coupé (00-04) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Demand for this ultra-chic city car really took off when right-hand-drive models hit the market. Before that it was available in left-hand-drive and there are now a small amount on the used market. As a result, prices for the original left-hand-drive cars have fallen to tempting levels. Buyers are attracted to its economical tiny engines, ease of parking and the attractive cabriolet. On sale in the UK since 2000, the range was re-branded fortwo from the start of 2004.

Buying used

Initially left-hand-drive, with ABS, clock, rev counter, radio cassette and electric windows. Right-hand-drive models were launched in November 2001. The cabriolet followed in May 2002, and there were significant changes to the entire range, which included a larger fuel tank, double ellipse (peanut-shaped) headlamps and optional electric sunroof. All Smarts have interchangeable coloured body panels. There are also a small number of Crossblades: left-hand-drive Smarts with no roof, windscreen or doors and a (necessary) waterproof interior. Understandably, demand for this model is very limited and there are just a few hundred on the road.

Selling

Cars with air conditioning and higher spec are most popular among buyers. Reasonable used pricing (for a premium product) maintains interest.
