Smart Fortwo Cabriolet (04-07) - Review

Review by Dan Harrison on
Giving the smart a convertible roof has taken nothing away in terms of practicality but added an extra dose of fun to the already happy mix of compact dimensions, Mercedes-Benz kudos, funky interior and nippy handling. Tiny turbocharged engine has enough go for town driving and the paddleshift gearbox is fun and easy to use. Plastic body panels are interchangeable for different colours.

Running costs

Economical engine and cheap road tax, and insurance groups were lowered across the board in summer 2005. Residuals are little different to those of the coupé version meaning they're good for the time being. Servicing tends to be quite expensive.

Emissions summary

Fortwo performs remarkably well on the eco front. With an average of 117 g/km CO2 across the line-up, its emissions are impressively low for a mini cabriolet. It's worth noting that the line-up does not feature any diesel models, which typically produce less carbon dioxide than petrol engines with similar power outputs. The range is extremely frugal, averaging 58 mpg.
