Smart Roadster Coupé (03-07) - Review Review by David Ross on 19 November 2009 List the key attributes for any good small sports car and stylish good looks, sharp handling and peppy engines are likely to be at the top. The Smart Roadster boasts all three, plus that all important fun factor, making it one of the most characterful two seaters of recent times. It is very small at less than three and half metres long, but there's a surprising amount of legroom in the cabin, even for those over six foot tall. Powered by a distinctive 698cc turbocharged engine its performance figures don't look particularly impressive on paper, but out on the road it feels very nippy, with great acceleration from low down. The Roadster Coupe is also great fun and guaranteed to put a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel. It's a car that is destined to be a future classic. 3.5 out of 5 Other Smart reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery 2.5 out of 5 Comfort As you'd expect of a car this size, the interior of the Roadster Coupe is pretty cosy, but there's more room than you'd imagine. Legroom is surprisingly good, even for taller drivers, helped by the fact there's no clutch pedal. There's plenty of headroom too and the seats are pretty comfortable, although they do lack the support needed for longer journeys. It can be very noisy on the motorway and there's lots of wind noise from the roof - especially on models with the optional removable roof panels. It's far from relaxing as a result so long journeys can be quite tiring. There's also a fair amount of engine noise, as it sits directly behind the driver, but it's characterful more than intrusive. There's not loads of space but you ought to get a weeks shopping or a weekends luggage for two inside - but only in overnight bags or very compact hand luggage. The tiny door pockets are pretty much useless and the thin glovebox won't hold much either. The two-piece plastic roof can be removed and stored in the back (thanks to special polystyrene holders) and the side bars also come off to give a great open-top driving experience. Removing the roof isn't that straightforward and takes a few goes to get used to. It's also much easier to do with two people. Not everyone likes the sequential gearchange, which is operated via the gearstick or optional steering wheel mounted paddles, but with familiarity it's less of an issue. The plastics aren't especially hardwearing though and can scratch quite easily, especially on the doors, while the stereo isn't great for volume or quality of sound. Models with the removable roof panels can be quite squeaky and rattly, especially on uneven country roads. View full gallery Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
