Subaru Impreza Saloon (00-05) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Best known for the high performance WRX STi versions, this Impreza is recognised for being great to drive with strong performance. The top versions are certainly impressive with masses of power and superb handling. However, refinement and finesse are in short supply and although these models are undoubtedly quick, they're not very comfortable for passengers. The standard 2.0-litre Impreza is a little lacklustre in terms of performance, but has a smoother ride and still drives well. All models come with four-wheel drive giving excellent traction, especially in the wet. This model was launched with the controversial round headlamps which found few fans. Later it was facelifted with more angled headlights.

Comfort

Rear space is comparatively good. It’s beaten by the best hatchbacks but they can’t match the WRX for performance and few performance cars can offer rear doors even if they have rear seats.

Practicality

Again, boot space is good for a performance car but there are bigger load luggers about. Rear seats do fold down, but if you really need practicality buy the five-door version.

Behind the wheel

The essentials are well taken care of – supportive bucket seats and a nice steering wheel as befit a real driver’s car. Interior quality is much improved over the previous model.
