Suzuki SX4 Hatchback (06 on) - Review

Review by David Ross on
Last Updated: 08 March 2011
The SX4 is a bit of an oddity. It's a five-door hatchback, similar to the Suzuki Swift, but it comes with a chunky off roader look and is available with four-wheel drive. The result is a slightly quirky cross between the two but it's also a success. It's practical and roomy inside, very comfortable on the move and handles well too with positive steering and an agile nature. The majority of models sold are only two-wheel drive and there are two subtly different body styles, one featuring extra wheel arch mouldings, roof rails and protective bodywork while this is absent in the more standard version. The SX4 was developed in collaboration with Fiat, who provided the diesel engine and offer a near identical model called the Sedici. It was facelifted in 2010 with an improved interior and a more powerful petrol engine.

Buying new

If you want a dependable runabout with chunky styling and four-wheel drive when you need it, the SX4 is a tempting proposition especially as most owners never actually need the full off-road capability of the cars they buy. The two-wheel drive model has less to differentiate it from alternative small hatchbacks but still makes an appealing little car. The 1.6 DDiS is better in terms of fuel consumption but only comes as a 4x4. The 1.6-litre petrol is more popular and is better value, while still being usefully frugal.

Buying used

The SX4 should be a reliable used buy thanks to its sturdy build, however tracking down the top diesel and four-wheel drive versions may require some patience - most models are two-wheel drive. If you want a 4x4 model, look for a Fiat Sedici - it's a near identical car - but in contrast to the SX4, most examples are four-wheel drive.

Selling

Suzukis are generally well respected by owners so selling one shouldn't be too hard although it may depend upon the trim you have. Suzuki dealers should offer the best trade-in values.
