The SX4 is a bit of an oddity. It's a five-door hatchback, similar to the Suzuki Swift, but it comes with a chunky off roader look and is available with four-wheel drive. The result is a slightly quirky cross between the two but it's also a success. It's practical and roomy inside, very comfortable on the move and handles well too with positive steering and an agile nature. The majority of models sold are only two-wheel drive and there are two subtly different body styles, one featuring extra wheel arch mouldings, roof rails and protective bodywork while this is absent in the more standard version. The SX4 was developed in collaboration with Fiat, who provided the diesel engine and offer a near identical model called the Sedici. It was facelifted in 2010 with an improved interior and a more powerful petrol engine.

Running costs

Fuel economy is pretty good with all models capable of achieving 40mpg and even four-wheel drive versions can be driven in two-wheel drive to reduce fuel consumption. The 1.6 DDiS is the most frugal and can average 53mpg. Suzuki servicing is good value but some parts can be on the expensive side and difficult to come by. Insurance is affordable though with most models group 16 or 17 (in the newer 1 to 50 rating system introduced at the end of 2009).

The SX4 is a reasonably environmentally friendly choice for green buyers. With an average of 150g/km CO2 across the line-up, its emissions are quite low for a hatchback with four-wheel drive. The range is also fairly economical and the newer 1.6-litre petrol, introduced in 2010, returns 46mpg. The 1.6 DDiS is the most frugal though with 53mpg achievable - while revised models are even better averaging 58mpg and emitting 129g/km of CO2.
