Toyota Auris (07 on) - Review

Toyota decided it was finally time to retire the ‘Corolla’ name in 2007 by renaming the world’s favourite hatch the Auris. Rumour has it despite selling more than 30 million cars Toyota wanted a new name for Britain to spearhead its fresh assault on the small hatch market. The Auris was indeed all-new, but aside from the odd interior quirk, it remains a car you buy with your head rather than your heart. Picking up where the Corolla left off the Auris remained a well built, comfortable, easy-to-drive car with a good level of equipment. Early on there was a wide choice of engines and even a sporty SR180 diesel for those in the market for a quick, but efficient, hot hatch. In 2010 Toyota gave the Auris a subtle facelift. Build quality was improved and the suspension was tweaked for a better drive. The engine range was also simplified to just two petrols and one diesel. The Auris Hybrid Synergy Drive (HSD) was introduced in May 2010 and it features a 1.8-litre engine combined with an electric motor and continuous transmission. It's a low CO2, low fuel consumption model aimed at buyers who are interested in eco-friendly cars but do not want to make such a bold statement as Prius owners. The Auris HSD comes in two trims - T4 and T Spirit - with prices starting at £18,950. It is the first mainstream Toyota to get the HSD powertrain and the Japanese firm says it plans to introduce it to the rest of its model line-up.

The entry level model is the T2 with air conditioning, nine airbags, ABS with EBD, electric front windows, remote central locking and an MP3-compatible CD stereo. T3 adds 16-inch alloy wheels, colour-keyed door mirrors and handles, front fog lamps, heated door mirrors, leather-trimmed steering wheel, electric rear windows (on five-door), steering wheel-mounted audio controls and a six-speaker stereo system. T Spirit gets automatic headlights, keyless entry, dual zone climate control, automatic wipers, cruise control and an auto-dimming rearview mirror while the T180 has smoked glass headlamps, different interior detailing, an electric sunroof, alloy wheels, vehicle stability control and traction control. The TR was originally a launch special edition, available with 1.6-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel engines. It has the same spec as T3, but adds scuff plates and chrome detailing. It was later made a permanent trim level and also got dual zone air conditioning, 16-inch alloys, blue seat trim and interior chrome detailing. The SR trim was introduced later and is designed to be mildly sporty with 17-inch alloys, lowered sports suspension, a rear spoiler, privacy glass, front fog lights, climate control and a leather steering wheel with audio controls. In 2009 the line-up was simplified to T2, TR, T Spirit and SR180, and in 2010 revised again to T2, TR and SR with a range-topping hybrid version added in the latter half of the year. The 2010 models had a minor makeover such as new materials on the dashboard to improve quality and all models gained USB and AUX inputs for portable music devices as standard.
