Toyota Avensis Hatchback (97-03) - Review

Review by Parkers on
By the time the Carina E went out of production in 1998, Toyota had picked up a reputation for making cars that were comfortable and reliable, but essentially bland. Avensis was the company's first stab at changing that - it was as comfortable and reliable as ever, but Toyota injected a bit of excitement, with sleeker lines, a more comfortable ride and advertising that included a trendy Iggy Pop soundtrack.

Buying used

Independent traders offer the best value if you're buying from a dealer. Loads at auction and on the private market, too. 2.0 D4-D CDX fetches the best prices, because it's a good diesel engine and has a good level of spec. 2.0 SR is popular as alloy wheels, a spoiler and mesh grille makes it look sporty.

Loads and loads around, and nobody wants a bad one. That means that a full service history is vital. Most buyers won't be fussed about an above-average mileage.
