Toyota Avensis Hatchback (97-03) - Review

Review by Parkers on
By the time the Carina E went out of production in 1998, Toyota had picked up a reputation for making cars that were comfortable and reliable, but essentially bland. Avensis was the company's first stab at changing that - it was as comfortable and reliable as ever, but Toyota injected a bit of excitement, with sleeker lines, a more comfortable ride and advertising that included a trendy Iggy Pop soundtrack.

Safety

Three-star Euro NCAP rating is good for its time, but now considered below-average. ABS, twin airbags plus side airbags, rear centre three-point belt. Remote locking and immobilisers are standard throughout. Alarm on all except low-spec S models.

Reliability

Cast-iron reliability record; problems are only likely to arrive with ultra-high mileages or neglect. Interior quality is good - up to the standards of a similarly-aged Mondeo or Vectra, but still some way behind German rivals.
