Toyota Aygo (05 on) - Review

The Aygo is Toyota's take on an urban runabout aimed primarily at twenty-somethings. Jointly developed with Peugeot and Citroen (although the vehicle design is all Toyota's work), the Aygo has a frugal yet feisty three-cylinder engine, ultra-low running costs and superior quality to most cars this small. Available as a three or five-door, it will just about transport four six-foot adults in relative comfort, with nimble handling and a smooth ride - however the boot is tiny and the cabin is fairly basic too. The Aygo+ and Sport models add extra kit over the base model, while option packs include Samsonite bags and portable satellite navigation. An automated manual gearbox is also available with similar fuel consumption to the standard manual.

Buying new

Despite Citroen and Peugeot having more of a reputation for budget cars than Toyota, the Aygo is actually the cheapest of the trio of cars (alongside the C1 and 107) with the entry-level three-door model priced at around £7,000 and the five-door costing £350 more. Toyota's incentives for buying a new Aygo are based on reducing insurance costs. A programme called Aygo Insure adds an additional year's no claims bonus for customers to any they may already have, or gives them a year if they have none, which could offer a discount of up to 40%.

Buying used

Although it's cheap city runabout, air con is popular, so don't expect models with this option to stick around for long - and they command a slight premium over models without. The diesel is more expensive but offers little in the way of improved fuel consumption (mainly because the petrol is outstanding to start with). To see a return on the outlay of opting for diesel, you will need to cover a distance of approximately 250,000 miles.

Selling

Demand for small cars is growing, and the quality of the Aygo as well as the Toyota brand will also be strong selling points. The petrol will prove more desirable than the diesel version and buyers will be on the look out for Aygo+ models.
