Toyota Previa (90-00) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Previa is both huge and hugely impressive as a people carrier that first addressed the problem of where all the MPV occupants were going to put their luggage. Although buyers get a lot vehicle for their money, it's not such brilliant value for money when you compare specification, equipment and flexibility with many rivals. Only the GL initially got a driver's airbag and ABS brakes, although an electric sunroof is standard. The Chrysler Grand Voyager and Renault Grand Espace are its biggest rivals, but the Previa can still make an egg-shaped case for itself. Not surprisingly it seats eight!

Comfort

Roomier than most rivals; excellent seats, good head and legroom, versatile layouts; quality trim; GS and GL would benefit from air conditioning; huge load capacity; sliding rear door on the near-side only can be awkward.

Practicality

One thing the Previa does not lack is space, the interior lacks a little versatility despite seating up to eight people. The seats do not swivel, or do many tricks and the rear door is on the right side only which is something you have to remember when parking. Otherwise the sliding door is ideal. Bigger load capacity than many of its rivals, too.

Behind the wheel

Feels substantial, even bulky at times. Good driving position with excellent all-round visibility. Shows its age on the inside - the layout of some of the instruments could be better.
