Toyota Previa (90-00) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Previa is both huge and hugely impressive as a people carrier that first addressed the problem of where all the MPV occupants were going to put their luggage. Although buyers get a lot vehicle for their money, it's not such brilliant value for money when you compare specification, equipment and flexibility with many rivals. Only the GL initially got a driver's airbag and ABS brakes, although an electric sunroof is standard. The Chrysler Grand Voyager and Renault Grand Espace are its biggest rivals, but the Previa can still make an egg-shaped case for itself. Not surprisingly it seats eight!

Safety

This is an area where the Previa shows its age, as there is not much active safety equipment for the entry level GS, although other models in the range have a driver’s airbag and ABS brakes. Rather confusing in that some versions come with an alarm, while only the top of the range GX initially got an engine immobiliser. This sort of vehicle needs more protection, which many buyers would have fitted.

Reliability

Toyota build quality and the fact that the Previa is so well proven. The only problems are with high milers - they have noticeably worn interiors, and the occasional grumble with auto gearboxes.
