Toyota Prius Hatchback (09 on) - Review

Review by David Ross on
The third Toyota Prius may not look that different from its predecessor but thanks to several key improvements it's actually a big leap forward. Like before it's a hybrid, so uses a conventional petrol engine alongside an electric motor, but it is now a realistic alternative to low-emission diesel cars when it comes to performance and driving. There's just one gearbox - an automatic CVT - but it has seamless changes while the 1.8-litre engine and electric motor deliver responsive performance. It's cleaner and more powerful than the previous Prius while in town it can operate purely in electric mode, using no fuel and with zero emissions. Unlike before, if you choose a Prius you don't have to make sacrifices in performance for the sake of owning a hybrid.

Buying new

Compared to previous versions of the Prius, this model is a much more realistic alternative to normal petrol or diesel cars. It's not particularly cheap with the entry-level model priced at more than £18,000 - around £3,000 more than the cheapest Honda Insight. But it is better to drive than the Honda and comes very well equipped too. A discount isn't out of the question, although you may need to be a determined negotiator.

Buying used

Hybrid cars are becoming more popular so finding a Prius on the second hand market shouldn't be a problem. The top of the range T Spirit is the most popular model and comes very well equipped with sat nav and a reversing camera. But even the base-level T3 gets plenty of standard kit. Don't bother looking for a T1 or T2 - they don't exist. If you've never owned a hybrid before then there's no need to worry, the technology has proved extremely reliable in a range of cars from the Prius up to the four-wheel drive Lexus RX. The rechargeable batteries that run the electric motor have been designed to last the lifetime of the vehicle.

Selling

While the general public's understanding of what hybrids are has increased, they're still an unknown for many buyers. Luckily the Prius is probably the best known hybrid car which gives you an immediate advantage. It's also very much like driving any standard petrol car - but with the benefits of superb economy and free road tax. These should be key selling points which make it attractive to many buyers, especially those who live in London and will be able to avoid the congestion charge.
