The RAV4 has become one of the most successful small 4x4s since it was originally launched in 1994. So much so in fact, that it has inspired plenty of offroaders from other carmakers. With ever more competition, it has had to constantly improve and as a result it's now one of the best 4x4s on the market, helped by an excellent reputation for reliability. The engine choice is limited to one diesel and one petrol, but inside there's a neatly-styled and good quality cabin, while on the road it's refined and comfortable. Newer offroaders may be more stylish, but the RAV4 remains a great choice and one that's guaranteed to never let you down. It was upgraded in 2009 with more powerful engines and subtle exterior changes.

Buying new

Toyota dealers aren't known for their generous discounts and incentives such as free insurance and 0% finance can be hard to find on Toyota's more desirable models. It's likely that you'll have to stick to the Toyota dealer network too, as it will be a very rare sight in car supermarkets. Brokers may offer a modest discount though. There are just two trim levels - XT-R and SR. The two-wheel drive version is only available with the 2.0-litre Valvematic petrol engine and a manual gearbox.

Buying used

The range-topping T180 (which was dropped at the end of 2008) has a slightly different look to the rest of the range. The giveaway is at the back - there's no spare wheel as the T180 has run-flat tyres. You also need to know that the range originally started at XT3 - there is no XT1 or XT2. Like most other Toyota products residuals will be strong, so there won't be any bargains out there. Expect the best cars to be kept within the dealer network and to pay a premium for them. Around 80 per cent of cars will be the higher XT4 and XT5 spec. The majority are diesel. Two new trims - XT-R and SR - replaced everything else in 2008.
