Vauxhall Astra TwinTop (06-10) - Review

There are plenty of coupe convertibles on the market, allowing you to enjoy open air motoring in the summer but coupe-like comfort in the winter. The Astra TwinTop is Vauxhall's version and it's one of the best around. It shares the same front end as the Astra Sport hatch, giving it a sporty appearance, while at the back, the clever folding roof means there's no need for a length boot. The result is a car that looks very good with both the roof up and down - a feat not all the alternatives manage with as much success. It's good to drive, only let down by rather over assisted steering. It's also a shame the interior is so dull, but there's a good choice of engines, including a fine diesel.

Buying used

The TwinTop may not be as popular as the standard Astra but there are still plenty around on the second hand market. The base-level 1.6-litre engine is best avoided unless you're on a tight budget or only intend to potter around. The diesel is good for high mileage owners, although it does carry a premium. Be sure to drive any potential car with the roof both up and down and make sure it retracts and folds back up without any problems.

Selling

It may not have the image of upmarket alternatives like the Volkswagen Eos, but the TwinTop is an attractive car and a better coupe-convertible than many similar-priced models. It should be easy to sell, especially if you have a diesel model.
