There's no shortage of hot hatches on offer to buyers looking for performance and sharp handling - it seems that we can't get enough of them in the UK. But with so much choice a car has to stand out to get noticed and that's exactly what the Corsa VXR does. It's no shrinking violet with it's aggressive bodykit, rear diffuser and plenty of spoilers and skirts - clearly this is unashamedly a no holds barred hot hatch. It has the power to back up it's looks too thanks to a 192bhp 1.6-litre turbocharged engine which delivers storming performance and a 0-60mph time of just 6.8 seconds. Agile and composed handling, a raspy exhaust note and bucket sports seats complete the package and make the Corsa VXR one of the best small performance cars around.

Comfort

The bucket seats (produced by racing seat manufacturers Recaro) are supportive and grip front occupants without feeling claustrophobic, although larger people may find them a bit too tight. The lack of memory in the driver's seat means it's necessary to re-adjust the seat every time you use the rear - but this is a complaint of many three-door cars. The engine's plentiful low-down pulling power means it can cruise easily, using a high gear at motorway speeds, avoiding the noise levels of more highly-strung rivals.

Practicality

The VXR makes do with the same boot dimensions and split folding rear seats as other Corsa models which means it's average for the class. Unlike the rest of the range, however, it's only available with a tyre repair kit to deal with punctures - the rear diffuser eliminating the space under the boot where a spare wheel would go. Boot space is made more useable by a removable false floor, which gives the boot two levels plus there are also numerous storage features within the cabin including a storage tray beneath the passenger seat.

Behind the wheel

In addition to the sports seats, the leather-clad steering wheel - finished with aluminium trim and flattened-off bottom, is a treat to look at and to hold. The rest of the interior is enhanced over the standard Corsa with sections of gloss-black, lacquer-like plastic, aluminium trim and alloy pedals. The steering column adjusts for height as well as for reach and the driver's seat also adjusts for height giving plenty of scope for a comfortable driving position.
