Vauxhall Meriva (10 on) - Review

Review by Parkers on
Last Updated: 03 March 2011
The first Meriva was a budget value small family car but was found wanting in many areas, not least quality and refinement. This model is a huge leap forward in both those fields but retains the family-friendly practicality and versatility of the previous model. It’s considerably larger than before, but the big talking point is the rear-hinged side doors that are a genuinely useful feature and make getting into the back seats or fitting a child seat much easier than with conventional doors. On the move the Meriva is easy to drive, helped by light steering and excellent visibility, so it’s ideal in towns and cities. The interior is impressive too, with an easy-to-use layout and good quality materials borrowed from the Astra and Insignia.

Buying new

This Meriva is a huge improvement on the previous model and considerably larger. As a result, it’s no longer an alternative for cars like the Nissan Note or Skoda Roomster. Instead it’s large enough to compete with the Renault Scenic and Citroen C4 Picasso. Alongside those it’s good value for money with low starting prices but equipment levels could be better. You have to opt for an Exclusiv to get air conditioning while only top SE models have alloy wheels. As with any Vauxhall, you should aim for a discount or at least some options included for free.

Buying used

There’s a good mix of models on the used market, but the majority will be 1.4 Turbo engine versions, with the 120bhp the most popular. Air conditioning is standard on Exclusiv and SE models while it’s optional on the S. The best low mileage examples will be at Vauxhall dealerships or through the firm's Network Q used car programme.

Selling

The old Meriva had somewhat of an image problem – it was hardly the most youthful or stylish of family cars. This model is breath of fresh air and one of the best small family cars around, while the clever rear doors give it something genuinely unique. You should have few problems selling one, although most buyers will prefer the top SE model.
