Small and stylish, the Vauxhall Tigra is a two-seater convertible that combines sharp looks and open-air fun with low running costs and frugal engines. There are plenty of neat touches but the real highlight is the neat metal folding roof.

The Tigra was awarded a respectable four stars by Euro NCAP for adult safety in a crash. This was a fairly good score when the model was launched but newer convertibles, such as the Peugeot 207 CC have been awarded the maximum five stars. All models come with ESP stability control along with a brake assist system that reinforces brake pressure in the event of an emergency. Four airbags are standard including side airbags.

Reliability

Cars with folding hard tops have plenty to go wrong and models like the Peugeot 206 CC have proved how unreliable some coupe convertibles can be. But the Tigra has proved reliable and we've heard of no major problems. That said, there have been several recalls.

Engine/Gearbox

A recall in 2006 where water may get into the ABS wiring causing a short circuit and fire. There was another recall in 2007 for a similar problem with the ABS caused by moisture in the control unit.

Other

A recall in 2005 for a problem where the passenger airbag could become loose. Another in 2007 where steering control may be lost.
