Vauxhall Zafira (99-05) - Review

Review by Parkers on
This Astra-based seven-seater was Vauxhall’s surprise package upon its launch in 1999. Its innovative ‘Flex 7’ seat-folding technology was a forerunner for many of today’s flexible people carriers, putting it ahead of its peers in terms of use of space, while its compact size means it’s a good drive, too. Unfortunately, the ride is ponderous and the rear seats are for small children only, but Zafira is a great choice for the family buyer in need of practical versatility and a bit of fun.

Comfort

Wind and road noise means that Zafira's less refined on the motorway, but it's otherwise competent, changing lanes and overtaking easily. The driver and front passenger have plenty of space and the seats are quite supportive. Adults in the rear will feel rather confined if travelling for any length of time, though kids should be fine.

Practicality

Cramming seven seats into such a small space impacts interior comfort, and the rear two seats are only really for kids due to limited legroom. In five-seat mode, Zafira makes a case as an estate rival. Fold all the seats flat into the floor using Vauxhall's clever 'Flex-7' technology, and it's ready for big-load jobs.

Behind the wheel

High driving position gives a good all-round view. The seats and steering wheel are adjustable, which makes it easy to get comfortable. Dials are clear, but some radio buttons are too small and fiddly. However, Zafira's driving position does feel more 'van-like' than the Astra on which it is based.
