Volkswagen California (05 on) - Review

Many people will have fond memories of once owning a 'Camper van'. And while plenty of these older models are still on the roads, it is perhaps easy to overlook the fact that Volkswagen still sells its equivalent today. Based on the Volkswagen Caravelle, the California offers a four-seat/four-berth travelling companion and even comes complete with the kitchen sink. The California sleeps two in it's pop-up roof compartment and two in the passenger compartment - it can also carry water and gas. It might lack the simplistic charm of the original Camper, but it's a capable part-time traveller and is certainly more manageable than a full-size motorhome.

Buying new

The California is an expensive vehicle, although compared to larger motorhomes it appears more affordable, albeit that bit smaller. It should be possible to negotiate a small discount but it's worth remembering that all the most important features are fitted as standard. Bear in mind that it's only sold through selected Volkswagen passenger car dealers as well as Commercial Vehicle centres, however your local Volkswagen dealer should be able to help you out even if it doesn't stock them.

Buying used

There aren't many models on the market, so choosing the best of what's available might be difficult. The best place to look is via a Volkswagen van dealer - they'll have the best examples, but most buyers hold on to their vans for lengthy periods so you're unlikely to ever be spoilt for choice.

Selling

This is quite a specialist vehicle, so it would be best to advertise it in the motorhome/caravan sections of classified ads rather than the local paper. Cruise control, an awning, and rear parking sensors should help sell it. Limited numbers mean you have rarity on your side, but you'll only be appealing to a specific market.
