Volkswagen California (05 on) - Review

Many people will have fond memories of once owning a 'Camper van'. And while plenty of these older models are still on the roads, it is perhaps easy to overlook the fact that Volkswagen still sells its equivalent today. Based on the Volkswagen Caravelle, the California offers a four-seat/four-berth travelling companion and even comes complete with the kitchen sink. The California sleeps two in it's pop-up roof compartment and two in the passenger compartment - it can also carry water and gas. It might lack the simplistic charm of the original Camper, but it's a capable part-time traveller and is certainly more manageable than a full-size motorhome.

Comfort

The California has large supportive seats in the front and a two-seat rear bench which can slide along rails. Air conditioning is standard (with the option of upgrading to automatic climate control) and there is an auxiliary heater to keep it warm when camping. Cruise control is optional on manual versions (standard on the auto) and front windows and mirror adjustment is electric. The upper bed is a little more comfortable than the rear seat folded flat. Its wooden slatted base under the thin mattress means it's sprung and easier to sleep on. The lower bed is firmer and the seatbelt points are hard to avoid.

Practicality

This isn't a typical vehicle for the weekly run to the shops and it is only a four-seater. However, it is likely that the California will be a second vehicle for most owners, with something more suitable for everyday journeys. There are plenty of storage compartments for all the paraphernalia associated with going camping plus a large drawer under the rear bench and cupboards under the stove/sink unit. There is even storage to hang clothes and several other clever cubbies. The tailgate even conceals a couple of folding chairs while a roll-out awning is optional. The California has a 30-litre tank for fresh water as well as a storage tank for waste water. Anyone needing a toilet will have to use whatever facilities that may be available at the chosen campsite, but perhaps that's just as well.

Behind the wheel

The interior has a high-quality feel typical of Volkswagens. Huge door mirrors offer a great rearward visibility, but visibility through the rear of the cabin is hampered by an overhead storage compartment inside the tailgate. Overall the driver has a good view, thanks to the high seating position while the instruments and controls are laid out in a logical fashion. The gearstick is mounted on the dashboard and is ideally positioned while the front seats can be turned around to face the rear, allowing passengers to eat meals off the table.
