Volkswagen Fox (06 on) - Review

This is the cheapest new Volkswagen in recent memory - a roomy, easy-to-drive city runabout that's cheap to run and well built. It effectively replaced the Volkswagen Lupo, but is far superior with better refinement and more interior space. It may lack the charm and personality of other small cars like the Fiat Panda or Toyota Aygo, but it makes up for it with a versatile and comfortable interior. There are just a handful of engines and trims available, making the range simple and easy to understand.

Buying new

If you're looking for good build quality, lots of space and a prestigious badge, then the Fox is an ideal choice. However, although it's competitively priced, it does lack equipment that's starting to be seen as a necessity, rather than a luxury. Specifying air conditioning adds almost £1,000 to the list price, so it's worth trying to get some form of discount.

Buying used

The majority of cars on the market are the entry-level 55bhp 1.2-litre. This is no bad thing as it's affordable, cheap-to-run and the 1.4-litre doesn't offer that much more. However, it is lacking in the kind of equipment that most other small cars have as standard. Air conditioning is an option, so will be rather scarce - expect to pay a premium for it.

Selling

There's rarely a problem selling small cars. The Fox is frugal, falls into the lowest insurance groups and has the desirable Volkswagen badge on the front, meaning there should be sufficient demand.
