This is the cheapest new Volkswagen in recent memory - a roomy, easy-to-drive city runabout that's cheap to run and well built. It effectively replaced the Volkswagen Lupo, but is far superior with better refinement and more interior space. It may lack the charm and personality of other small cars like the Fiat Panda or Toyota Aygo, but it makes up for it with a versatile and comfortable interior. There are just a handful of engines and trims available, making the range simple and easy to understand.

Safety

A four-star Euro NCAP crash-test rating is on par with most other small cars on sale, although newer models with the full five star rating aren't unheard of. Fitted as standard are dual front airbags, ABS, all-round three-point seatbelts and Isofix child seat anchor points. Side airbags and an electronic stability programme can be specified as an option. Security-wise every Fox has an immobiliser, while the Urban Fox gains remote central locking. A dealer-fit alarm is optional.

Reliability

Much of the Fox is based on the Polo and other proven Volkswagen cars. It should be mechanically strong, but the fit of the interior is disappointing - when compared to other Volkswagens - although the materials appear robust.
