Volkswagen Jetta (06-10) - Review

Volkswagen has returned to the original Jetta name for its smaller family saloon, relegating the previous Vento and Bora names to history. While the Golf influence is obvious from the front and from behind the wheel, the rear has much in common with the upmarket Passat and it's a good alternative to the larger four-door. The Jetta is good to drive in all its engine variations, and can squeeze three passengers into the rear quite comfortably. It has a huge boot and is quite handsome, but still won't hold its value as well as an equivalent Golf. However, this makes it a good used buy.

Buying used

It will be a few hundred pounds cheaper than an equivalent Golf hatchback and the price gap will not become any wider with age. This makes it a good bargain compared to a Golf or a larger Passat. The early 1.6-litre engine is a good choice for lower mileage drivers, but it was replaced by the 1.4 TSI in late 2007 - this is a better performer and more economical too.

Selling

A few people still prefer saloons to hatchbacks, but they are rare. However, if you ask a few hundred pounds less than an equivalent Golf, it shouldn't be too difficult to sell.
