Volkswagen Jetta (06-10) - Review

Review by Simon Harris on
Last Updated: 02 October 2009
Volkswagen has returned to the original Jetta name for its smaller family saloon, relegating the previous Vento and Bora names to history. While the Golf influence is obvious from the front and from behind the wheel, the rear has much in common with the upmarket Passat and it's a good alternative to the larger four-door. The Jetta is good to drive in all its engine variations, and can squeeze three passengers into the rear quite comfortably. It has a huge boot and is quite handsome, but still won't hold its value as well as an equivalent Golf. However, this makes it a good used buy.

Running costs

The Jetta holds its value reasonably well, but not as well as the Golf. It is, however, better than saloon versions of the Ford Focus or Renault Megane. All the engines are pretty economical, although if you're looking to save money, the 2.0-litre petrols are best avoided. Servicing costs tend to be high in the Volkswagen dealer network due to high labour rates, though the costs of parts can be quite reasonable.

It's based on the following cost-per-litre: petrol 135p and diesel 141p. Prices are updated daily.

Summary Running Costs

Servicing period

Variable servicing (up to approximately 18,000 miles or two years) or fixed servicing (at every 10,000 miles or 12 months) can be chosen when new. It is possible to change from one to another during the vehicle’s life, but it can only be done when a full inspection service is due.

Warranty

Three years/60,000 miles.

Road tax (12 months)

£100.00 - £270.00

Vehicle excise duty (VED) varies according to the CO2 emissions and the fuel type of the vehicle. For cars registered after March 1st 2001 VED or road tax is based on the car's CO2 emissions. For cars registered before March 1st 2001 it is based on engine size.

Emissions summary

The Jetta scores well on the eco front, helped by the fact there's a Bluemotion model. This is fitted with the 1.9 TDI engine and thanks to engine and aerodynamic changes, emits 122g/km of CO2 while averaging 61mpg.
