The Passat Mk 4 was the embodiment of Volkswagen values when launched in 1997: better built than rivals, ultra-reliable and engaging to drive. That wasn't all - it was generously equipped, had fine engines and subtle styling that stood head and shoulders above Mondeo, Vectra and the stodgy old Passat Mk 3.

Buying used

Buyers are still keen to own this generation of Passat. Plenty of good examples in the general trade now that the VW network no longer mops up all the best stock. Ex-fleeters are the cheapest way into Passat ownership, though some buyers are hesitant about high mileage cars despite an excellent reliability record.

Selling

Estates are faster seller than the saloons. Buyers are most keen on diesels and top-specification models. A Volkswagen service history will ensure a speedy sale.
