Volkswagen Passat Estate (97-01) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Passat Mk 4 was the embodiment of Volkswagen values when launched in 1997: better built than rivals, ultra-reliable and engaging to drive. That wasn't all - it was generously equipped, had fine engines and subtle styling that stood head and shoulders above Mondeo, Vectra and the stodgy old Passat Mk 3.

Safety

Passat is solid for its age, earning three stars in the Euro NCAP crash test; this sounds average now but was a good result at the time, when stars were awarded out of four rather than five. Coded transponder immobiliser; much better locks than the 1988-1997 Passat; fit extra Thatcham-approved kit to be sure.

Reliability

Very few problems reported.

Car check problem points

Body

Must be perfect unless the price reflects imperfections; high-milers (typically ex-fleet motorway mile munchers) may have stone chips.

Engine/Gearbox

Must have full service history to maintain warranty terms - many are still covered; a few reports of problems with cooling fans.

Other

Interior wear and tear on family or reps' estates.
