It may not be the most exciting small hatchback on the market but the Volkswagen Polo is hugely popular. And with excellent build quality, bullet-proof reliability and that all important Volkswagen badge on the grille, it's not hard to see why. Safe and comfortable to drive it's available with a wide choice of engines including some very economical diesels while the interior is durable and well finished. If you're looking to save money there's also an environmentally-friendly Bluemotion model available. Thanks to engine tweaks, aerodynamic changes and longer gearing this emits just 99g/km of CO2 - so it qualifies for free-road tax, plus it will average an incredible 74mpg. The model was facelifted in mid-2005 with a sharper look and angular headlights replacing the twin lights.

Comfort

Rear passengers get a better deal in five-door models than in the three-door - it's easier to get in and out of and there's slightly more legroom, however the rear is only suitable for two adult passengers and is too narrow for three abreast. Aside from that the cabin is airy and light and there's good head and legroom for the front passenger while ride comfort is good. The Polo does suffer from excessive wind noise at speed and some of the engines are loud, particularly the diesel models.

Practicality

Polo buyers benefit from the fact that the model has grown over the years. It's a roomy car with a decent-sized boot for this class but there are no special folding seats so it lacks the flexibility that you get with the Honda Jazz or Toyota Yaris. That said they do fold for increased load area and there are numerous cubby holes and a large glovebox. There is also under-seat storage on SE models and above.

Behind the wheel

The Polo's interior is simple and clearly laid out but lacks panache. However build quality is excellent and it feels robust and hard-wearing while the blue backlighting adds an upmarket feel. Visibility is pretty good, which is ideal for town driving and the driving position is comfortable so should suit most shapes thanks to adequate adjustment. Bluemotion models have unique interior fabrics and come with a trip computer as standard so owners can see whether they're matching the manufacturer's impressive economy claims.
