Volkswagen Touareg (10 on) - Review

Volkswagen has four main trim lines for the Touareg: SE, Escape, Altitude and R-Line, with the Hybrid version as a standalone trim. The Escape model is built for more serious off-road work and comes with added underbody protection.

The SE version of the Volkswagen Touareg comes with electrically adjusted and heated door mirrors, body-coloured bumpers, rear diffuser under the back bumper, and 19-inch alloy wheels.

It also has automatic headlights, front fog lights, auto-dimming rear view mirror, heated windscreen washers, parking sensors, hill start assist, six airbags and ESP. Electric windows are fitted all round, along with cruise control, climate control, multi-function steering wheel, CD stereo with digital radio, Bluetooth, air conditioning, heated front seats and leather upholstery.

The Altitude then adds a black roof lining, stainless steel interior trim, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for the automatic gearbox, sports suspension that sits 25mm lower to the ground, rear roof spoiler, chrome exhaust tail pipes, body kit with unique front and rear bumpers and side skirts, rear privacy glass and 20-inch alloy wheels.

R-Line has all the equipment of the Altitude plus 20-inch ‘Tarragona’ alloy wheels and restyled bumpers and side skirts for a more aggressive appearance. The spec also includes a full-length electric sliding sunroof, an electrically lifting tailgate and keyless entry and start.

For the Escape, VW fits smaller 18-inch alloy wheels, black roof rails, does away with the rear diffuser and adds more underbody protection. The Escape also gains a rear axle differential lock and 4XMotion four-wheel drive, as opposed to standard 4Motion all-wheel drive, for greater off-road driving ability.

To further help here, the Escape has bespoke off-road suspension that is not an option for the other models. The Hybrid model of Touareg has keyless entry and ignition, position memory for the electrically adjusted front seats and 19-inch alloy wheels.

Volkswagen Touareg customers can choose metallic paint, rear privacy glass, 20-inch alloy wheels, Bi-Xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, dynamic cornering lights, headlight washers, and a Driver’s Assistance pack that includes active cruise control, lane keeping assist and blind spot warning systems.

There is also a tyre pressure monitoring system, heated front windscreen, keyless entry and starting, heated steering wheel, powered tailgate, uprated stereo, Dynamic Air Suspension and parking heater to warm the car before you set off. A tow bar is another option, along with roof box, cycle and ski carriers, heated rear seats, panoramic sunroof and different choices of leather upholstery.
