Volkswagen Touran (03-10) - Review

Volkswagen's Touran is a seven-seat people carrier that's been on sale in the UK since 2003. It’s more traditionally styled than other people carriers, but its boxier shape means plenty of room for passengers in the back. It comes with seven-seats as standard but buyers can specify a five-seat version at no extra cost. Safe, spacious and comfortable the Touran is a good all-rounder, although it's far from exciting to drive. A facelift in 2007 brought a new look to the front (the headlights and chrome grille are new), smarter materials inside and a nifty optional extra that gives the car the ability to park itself. There's also an eco-friendly Bluemotion model available which averages an impressive 52mpg.

Buying used

It's easy to spot a facelifted Touran - they’re the ones with the big chrome grille. Aside from the looks, there are few meaningful differences, so we’d recommend going for a late pre-facelift car and saving yourself a few pounds. Volkswagen dealers tend to mop-up the best stock and you’ll have to pay a premium for it, though there are plenty of cars at independent dealers and available privately. Just don’t forget to check Parker’s prices to make sure you’re not paying over the odds.

Selling

Models from 2007 with Park Assist fitted (the system that parallel parks Touran for you) will be in particular demand – especially in towns and cities. Most Touran models are easy to shift at the right price thanks to the prestige of the Volkswagen badge and a strong used people carrier market. More than 80 per cent of new Tourans are diesel and this is reflected on the used market where they’re as popular as ever.
