Volkswagen Touran (03-10) - Review

Volkswagen's Touran is a seven-seat people carrier that's been on sale in the UK since 2003. It’s more traditionally styled than other people carriers, but its boxier shape means plenty of room for passengers in the back. It comes with seven-seats as standard but buyers can specify a five-seat version at no extra cost. Safe, spacious and comfortable the Touran is a good all-rounder, although it's far from exciting to drive. A facelift in 2007 brought a new look to the front (the headlights and chrome grille are new), smarter materials inside and a nifty optional extra that gives the car the ability to park itself. There's also an eco-friendly Bluemotion model available which averages an impressive 52mpg.

Comfort

Engine noise is only a problem if you’re pushing the 1.6-litre engine or the diesels (the 1.9 TDI can be very vocal). The diesels are good for cruising though where the volume is less noticeable, while road and wind noise are kept well in check. Crucially, a cosseting ride means the cabin is well isolated and the whole driving experience is relaxing. The second row of seats is reasonably roomy with plenty of head and legroom, though the rearmost two are for children only as space is very tight.

Practicality

Practicality and flexibility are the key reasons to buy a people carrier and the Touran doesn’t disappoint. The seats don’t need to be removed and fold flat into the floor, although the process isn’t as quick as a Mazda 5 or Citroen C4 Picasso. With the seats folded there’s a huge load area which is low to the ground and easy to load. The car also comes with seven seats as standard but buyers can opt for a five-seat version for no extra cost - but be aware that with all seven seats in place boot space drops to just 121 litres. Inside there’s plenty of storage areas, including some large underseat boxes, a sunglasses holder and a big glove box.

Behind the wheel

The high driving position gives a great view of the road ahead, although the chunky pillars restrict side visibility (in spite of the addition of a small ‘quarterlight’ window) and it can be hard to see out of the back with seven on board. But the driving position is highly adjustable and easy to get comfortable as the steering wheel adjusts for height and reach and the seat-height can be raised. The interior layout is simple and all the controls are easy to navigate while cars from 2007 get a fresher look inside and some new materials, although the changes aren’t radical.
