Volvo S40 (96-04) - Review

Review by Parkers on
The Volvo S40/V40 saloons and estates are often passed over because of their conservative looks and less than exciting drive. But they can be great used buys: comfortable, very safe, with a wide choice of specification. while its image may fall short of Audi A4, BMW 3-Series or VW Passat, S40/V40 makes a convincing case as a classier alternative to Vectra and Mondeo. Some early cars were not quite up to scratch in terms of build quality, but improvements were soon made and the range is now a sensible secondhand buy.

Safety

S40 has a four-star Euro NCAP rating. All cars have ABS, seat belt pre-tensioners, driver's airbag and Volvo's SIPS side airbag system. Deadlocks are fitted to all but the early base-model cars (where they are an option combined with central locking).

Reliability

Some build quality niggles on 1996-97 cars but overall a big improvement on the old 400 series; reliability on newer cars is above average, but look for full Volvo history for peace of mind.

Car check problem points

Body

Inspect early 1996 models very carefully for sub-standard fit and finish; bumpers can pick up unsightly scratches and scuffing.

Engine/Gearbox

No problems reported; many cars are still covered by the three-year warranty, which gives added peace of mind.

Other

Minor electrical faults, e.g. interior lights; quality of interior trim wasn't all that good on some early cars.
