Volvo S40 (04 on) - Review Review by Dan Harrison on 11 April 2007 Last Updated: 23 November 2009 This Volvo S40 is a clean break from the model that ran from 1996-2004. Whereas the old car picked up a slightly dowdy image by the end of its life, this model is stylish and well proportioned. It has some unique touches too - especially inside thanks to its clever 'floating' centre console - while the chunky styling gives an air of solidity. It uses the same platform as the Ford Focus so is composed and surefooted on the road - however it lacks the sophistication of some saloons and doesn't feel as agile. It's good value though and comes well equipped for the money while there's a choice of some strong engines including the excellent D5 diesel and T5 that's shared with the Ford Focus ST. 4 out of 5 Other Volvo reviews Summary Facts & Figures Equipment Driving & Performance Comfort Costs Safety & Reliability Buying & Selling Also Consider Company Car Info Owners' Reviews Gallery Also Consider 4.5 out of 5 Skoda Octavia Hatchback (04 on) Superb value for money, large boot space, well built interior, some great engines, reliable Diesels are noisy, interior design quite drab Read full review 4 out of 5 Mazda 3 Saloon (09-10) Stands out from the usual hatchbacks, good to drive, high levels of standard equipment, excellent 2.2-litre diesel engine Not as desirable or as practical as the hatchback version Read full review 4 out of 5 Volkswagen Jetta (11 on) Large amounts of boot space, improved rear passenger space, cheaper alternative to Passat Firm ride, lacks any real driving excitement, dull image Read full review Find other saloon cars Car Valuations Find used car prices with Parkers accurate car valuations.
