Volvo S40 (04 on) - Review

This Volvo S40 is a clean break from the model that ran from 1996-2004. Whereas the old car picked up a slightly dowdy image by the end of its life, this model is stylish and well proportioned. It has some unique touches too - especially inside thanks to its clever 'floating' centre console - while the chunky styling gives an air of solidity. It uses the same platform as the Ford Focus so is composed and surefooted on the road - however it lacks the sophistication of some saloons and doesn't feel as agile. It's good value though and comes well equipped for the money while there's a choice of some strong engines including the excellent D5 diesel and T5 that's shared with the Ford Focus ST.

Safety

This car is far more rigid than the model it replaced and the front is made from four grades of steel for improved crash performance. No surprise then that it gained a top five-star Euro NCAP rating - the safety association praising the S40 for its very strong and stable passenger safety cage. All cars get driver, passenger and side airbags, ABS and traction control while security consists of an immobiliser and unique-fit stereo. However, it wasn't until late 2007 that all cars came with Isofix child seat anchor points as standard.

Reliability

While Volvo has a good reputation for reliability and build quality, there have been numerous recalls for the S40 including potential problems with braking and the fuel pump. We've heard from several owners with problem cars (mostly earlier models) too, although many S40 owners have experienced trouble-free ownership.

Car check problem points

Body

A recall in 2005 for a faulty windscreen surround. Another in 2008 where incorrect rear wheel bolts could cause the wheels to loosen.

Engine/Gearbox

In 2006 there was a recall for a possible fuel leak which could result in a fire and another the same year for an ECU fault which could cause the engine to fail. In 2008 there was a recall for a potential fuel pump failure while 2009 saw a recall for a fan module issue which could cause an engine fire.

Other

A recall in 2006 where braking performance may be affected by a problem with the vacuum pump. There was a similar recall in 2008, this time because of possible leaks from the brake master cylinder. A second recall in 2008 came up because of a potential power steering pipe leak while another followed due to issues with the accelerator pedal not returning to its resting position. In 2009 there was another recall where the brakes may not perform properly due to a problem with the vacuum pressure pump.
