Volvo S60 (10 on) - Review Review by John Mahoney on 04 June 2010 Last Updated: 13 April 2012 Volvo’s last S60 came close, but not close enough to unseating, or even unsettling the German’s dominance of the small exec class. This time could be very different. The new small S60 has style, an innovative well-made interior, pioneering pedestrian-in-the-road sensing safety equipment and a new range of five-cylinder engines. Even braver, the Swedish firm claims its S60 is the sportiest car it has ever made. As well as the usual six airbags and anti-skid control, the S60 comes with the same City Safety as standard that uses radar to detect a car’s hard braking out in front. If it fails to detect any input from the driver it applies the brakes. New safety technology includes a world first – Pedestrian Protection. The system comes standard with the Driver Support Pack (£1,450) and uses both a radar sensor fixed in the grille and a camera mounted in the top of the windscreen to identify pedestrians. At below speeds of 21mph both camera and radar identify pedestrians and detect their movements. If the car thinks the pedestrian is in risk of being struck by the car, and all the systems detect no input from the driver it carries out a full emergency braking manoeuvre. The system is effective and should cut road deaths. The old S60 itself has proved tough and durable if not immune friom the odd electrical gremlin. Some of the most serious complaints from our readers involved malfunctioning ECUs which were very costly to replace. Let’s hope the electrics on the new car are a little more robust.
