Volvo S80 (06 on) - Review

Volvo's S80 is a premium, large saloon alternative to the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series. While it may not be seen as being as desirable as its German competitors, the S80 is stylish in a subtle way, and although most people would be interested in the diesel engines, there is also a range of four, five, six and eight-cylinder petrol engines. Safety features include a collision warning system, and a 'personal car communicator' key-fob which can tell if you've left the car unlocked. In 2009, Volvo further enhanced the S80s appeal with a mild redesign, both exterior and interior, added new features and upgraded the D5 diesel. The S80 is also now offered with two chassis: a performance version which sits lower and with stiffer suspension, or a comfort version for a more limousine-type ride. Late in 2009, a low-emissions DRIVe version was introduced.

Buying new

It shouldn't be difficult to negotiate a small discount on a new S80, particularly on a petrol version. It doesn't hold its value as well as similar-sized German cars, so make sure you get a good deal. There's a wide range of optional extras available too, so it's worth using these as extra bargaining tools.

Buying used

Diesel models will depreciate more slowly than petrol models, but if you are a low-mileage driver and can put up with the fuel bills a petrol model could be more of a bargain at a few years old. That said, the V8 is best avoided as it has sky-high running costs.

Selling

As you'd expect, the diesel models will sell best, especially the D5, while an automatic gearbox and satellite navigation will help. SE models are the most sought after (they have standard leather trim) but the merits of some of the optional safety features may be lost on used car buyers.
