Volvo S80 (06 on) - Review

Volvo's S80 is a premium, large saloon alternative to the Audi A6, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and BMW 5-Series. While it may not be seen as being as desirable as its German competitors, the S80 is stylish in a subtle way, and although most people would be interested in the diesel engines, there is also a range of four, five, six and eight-cylinder petrol engines. Safety features include a collision warning system, and a 'personal car communicator' key-fob which can tell if you've left the car unlocked. In 2009, Volvo further enhanced the S80s appeal with a mild redesign, both exterior and interior, added new features and upgraded the D5 diesel. The S80 is also now offered with two chassis: a performance version which sits lower and with stiffer suspension, or a comfort version for a more limousine-type ride. Late in 2009, a low-emissions DRIVe version was introduced.

Safety

It doesn't have an official Euro NCAP rating but the S80 is one of the safest car of this size, with a high level of 'protective' safety systems, such as its rigid body structure, deformation zones plus front, side and curtain airbags. There are also 'preventive' safety features like stability control, optional adaptive cruise control and a blind-spot information system. There is even a collision warning which uses a radar to sense whether a collision is likely depending on the closing speed and the reaction of the driver. It uses a buzzer as well as a red LED head-up warning flashed on to the windscreen to prompt the driver to take action. In later models, it comes with Auto Brake system, that applies the brakes if the driver takes no action and the car sensors a crash is imminent. The blind-spot information system uses rearward-facing cameras on the door mirrors to alert the driver to approaching traffic that might be outside the normal field of vision provided by the rearview mirrors.
