Volvo V50 (04 on) - Review

The trim line-up on the Volvo V50 is pretty straightforward with ES, SE, SE Lux and R-Design on offer. You can specify the ES, SE and SE Lux versions with Volvo’s fuel-saving DRIVe technology that introduces stop/start, low-rolling resistance tyres, improved aerodynamics and more efficient mechanicals. The advantage, clearly, is to reduce fuel use and CO2 emissions and that can mean up to 74.3mpg on average, but you can’t get the DRIVe tech on the R-Design model. Standard Volvo V50 equipment is pretty impressive. Base ES models get climate control, 16-inch alloy wheels, stability and traction control, electric windows, a leather steering wheel and gearknob, multifunction computer, floor mats, a CD player with aux-in for MP3 players. Step up to SE and you get half-leather upholstery, aluminium inlays, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a stereo upgrade, rear park assist and 17-inch alloy wheels. The SE Lux models up the ante with the inclusion of sat nav featuring two free-of-charge map updates, electric folding door mirrors with ground lights, sports steering wheel and leather upholstery. The R-Design is more of a statement rather than a trim level and it’s packed with nice Volvo V50 accessories such as fancy 17-inch alloys, LED daytime running lamps located in the lower bumper, while the interior gets a unique centre console inlay as well as an upgraded sound system. There’s also an R-Design logo featured in the front grille to let passers-by know that you have shelled out that bit extra. If you want you can go for one of Volvo’s optional equipment packs. There’s the Winter Pack that includes heated front seats and headlight cleaning system or you can pimp up the Winter Pack with the addition of active cornering lights. Volvo also offers the Family Pack that has two integrated child booster cushions, child locks and a sun curtain for the rear parcel shelf. Lastly, you can fork out for the Convenience Pack if you are buying the R-Design model and that includes auto-dimming rear-view mirror with humidity sensor, auto-folding door mirrors with ground lights, rain sensing windscreen wipers, rear armrest with cup holders and height-adjustable passenger seat with lumbar support.
